Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature, theater and other interests. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and showed her how she could use the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was drawn to television journalism during her time as a college student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to look over the residence of one of the jurors of the jury as well as look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move in public relations.
